Think about it. Everyone who was really ever 'special' or had a 'big destiny' with the island could see apparitions of dead people. Richard saw his wife, also dead and also never on the island, in his Season Six flashback. The Man in Black saw his dead 'real' mother, also. This is why, in the same episode that you are referencing, Alpert asks if she died on the island, or in the real world. That's when his eyes light up, because he realises this Ben kid is quite obviously special, or important to the island. The Island has always been a character of the show - maybe it picks people too, just like Jacob does.

That's just the way I see it.
