/r/atheism, I'd like to say I'm not Islamophobic, but everytime I read up on Sharia law, I can't help but think of it as one of the scariest ideas being implemented in the world right now. Am I wrong?

Taladar -2 points-1 points 9 hours ago[-]

The solution to Sharia law is true religious freedom with severe civil and criminal penalties for people who violate the citizenship rights of anyone in favor of enforcing their own religious code.

Parser failure, sentence meaning can not be determined without consulting context.

You probably mean

The solution to Sharia law is true religious freedom with severe civil and criminal penalties for people who violate anyone else's citizenship rights by enforcing their own religious code.

but it could be read as

The solution to Sharia law is true religious freedom with severe civil and criminal penalties for people who violate the citizenship rights of anyone who is in favor of enforcing their own religious code.

It was a miracle!

Many cultures had severe penalties for women who slept with men other than their husband (or any man while she was not yet married) long before Christianity too.

Qt is the reason why desktop apps will never die. kudos forever guys!

Taladar 1 point2 points 10 hours ago[-]

I tried that the last two times Qt was the topic of a discussion here on reddit, now I am just tired of arguing with people who seem to work under the assumption "there is nothing better around so lets take the least shitty and call it perfect".

But yeah, since jdkoeck mentions it, the MVC framework is just shitty, signals and slots hurt you a lot more in the long run in everything but things connected directly to GUI widgets than they help and even with those the API is often not very well thought out (e.g. it would often be nice to have separate signals for programmatic and actual user change), the decision not even to support exceptions, threads, templates and a lot of other more modern features can cost a lot of time too, especially in those places where they had a real need for them, e.g. QModelIndex would definitely be better as a template than as a class holding an opaque void *, a lot of their code just simply doesn't work properly in subtle ways or is not as integrated with each platform as it could be (especially Mac users tend to complain about the smallest differences to native behavior),...

Well, they really want it both. They want absolutely certain, unchanging information on all of their inputs (e.g. estimates, deadlines,...) but complete freedom in their outputs (e.g. that new whim turns into a requirement pretty quickly).

Yeah, must suck for those Muslims who thought they could bomb us (the rest of the world) into submission to see people blaspheme again so early.

You forgot "And don't tell me it needs to be something completely different when I am about to tell you I am finished".

Agile Ruined my Life

Taladar 2 points3 points 11 hours ago[-]

No, it is not agile if you only do the parts that are pleasant. To get a huge improvement in the result you have to do the changes that are painful too, those that affect office politics, those where management or customers have to change their behavior.

I think the problem is that most business people believe the bullshit they learn in business schools that is based on extremely outdated factory worker models and can not be applied to any modern knowledge worker jobs.

I can't say anything about Ultimate++ but all those people around here who claim Qt's API is clean and well documented clearly never used it enough to run into all the cases that reveal how bad the design of Qt is in many places and how much is actually left out of the documentation.

The Workman Keyboard Layout

Well, my main problem with it is the retarded placement of / about as far away from shift as possible, that is really annoying for Unix use.

I disagree. It should be on the required reading list for people who want to baptize and infant or be baptized themselves as adults before they are allowed to do so.

I bet a lot of people would turn their back on Christianity if they only read their own holy book.

In 30 years I have only seen a few examples where a mediocre programmer became good or a good one became great and zero examples of a mediocre programmer becoming great.

Taladar 8 points9 points 2 days ago[-]

You also need to abstract the right things. In particular your abstractions need to be designed in such a way that you can write your program without exposing the internals of your abstractions to half of your program, otherwise you might as well not bother abstracting that thing at all.

Every app has a scary basement

The problem is that the management definition of 'broken' is usually much more narrow and short-sighted than the programmer definition.

The Workman Keyboard Layout

This is the main reason I (as a German) use the English (Qwerty) keyboard layout. I type symbols much more frequently than the german umlauts (which take up the area to the right of the letters on the Germany Qwertz layout).

From this point on, Ariane 5 assumed the aerodynamic properties of an overhead projector and shortly afterwards turned itself into 12 km of debris. (PDF)

The real question is then, was there some kind of benefit to removing them for Ariane4 or was it premature optimization?

Due to your comment I just tried vcs_info (first I heard of it) and it disappoints a bit, in particular it doesn't seem to be capable of recognizing nested repositories properly (i.e. display the information of the inner repository) which makes it virtually useless since my home directory is in version control too.

Do you know if there is any continued development or if that was a one time contribution?

Android First Impressions From an Ex-iPhone Developer

Taladar 3 points4 points 2 days ago[-]

Sorry but you are biased if you claim that there are no negative aspects to Apple's app store policies. On a very objective level they make certain kinds of applications unavailable for the iPhone (e.g. emulators, compilers,...) which, given the fact that there you don't ever have to install or use one of them if you are not interested in them for some reason, can hardly be called a positive aspect of the platform.

There is no such thing as a completely unbiased viewpoint. At least not one that is in any way interesting to read. Not to mention the fact that ignoring negative aspects of something is not unbiased either.

Does it even matter in that case? I mean if he never did either the natural or the supernatural things attributed to him there is barely enough information left to even identify him, not to mention that his existence is completely insignificant in that case.

Avoid confrontation at all costs. Don't be spiteful.

Why?

I mean I can understand generally avoiding it where possible but "at all costs"?
