borderlands SAVE system. simply pass by a save point and it saves automatically. the concept is so genius i can't imagine why it wasn't done before!

The precursors to that were "checkpoints" the problem with them was that they were invisible, and you were only aware of them "After" the fact. The other implementation was a manual save point where you had to decide weather to save or not.
